Our local service: This guide is for property owners and strata committees in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Please check our listed service areas before enquiring about another suburb.

Before conceptAfter conceptAre peeling and bubbling the same problem?
Bubbles are raised areas of coating; peeling is paint separating and coming away. They can occur together, but a photograph alone may not establish why. Record where the problem appears, when you first noticed it and whether it returns after previous repairs.
Dulux describes moisture and application conditions among the possible contributors to blistering, and moisture or earlier blistering among causes of peeling. That does not mean every affected wall has the same cause.
What should be checked before another coat goes on?
Look at the wider setting: roof and gutter areas above the damage, exposed sills, joints, shaded surfaces and places that stay damp. Note whether the issue is confined to one elevation or appears throughout. If there is an active leak or deteriorated substrate, it needs attention before a decorative finish.
A painter can assess the coating and preparation scope. Some underlying issues need another appropriately qualified trade. Painting should follow the necessary repairs rather than conceal unresolved damage.
Does living near the coast change preparation?
Coastal exposure makes the surface condition particularly relevant, but proximity to the beach is not a diagnosis. Contaminants and weak old coating need assessment wherever the property is located. Dulux’s adhesion guidance identifies dirt, grease, salt and loose material as obstacles to adhesion.
Our coastal paint guide discusses product selection. This page focuses on investigating an existing failure, which comes before deciding what new finish to use.
Can I just scrape the patch and paint over it?
A small visible patch may sit within a larger area of weak coating. The extent of removal and preparation should be based on what is sound, not just the outline of the blemish. Repainting over an unresolved cause can leave the same problem underneath.
For an older house, avoid disturbing unknown paint before assessing it. NSW advises professional help for lead-paint removal; see its renovation guidance. This is not a DIY stripping procedure.
What should I send when asking for an inspection?
Send one overall photograph of the wall or window and a close-up of the damage. Include the suburb, approximate age of the coating if known, any leak or repair history, and whether the affected surface is timber, render or metal. Mention height and access restrictions.
Ask the quote to distinguish investigation or repairs from preparation and repainting. Our preparation page explains the painting stage; the exterior cost guide explains why condition and access affect the budget.
We assess painting work within our listed service areas, including the Eastern Suburbs. A site assessment is needed before recommending a coating system or promising the scope of a repair.
Frequently asked questions
Does bubbling always mean a water leak?
No. Moisture is one possible cause, but application conditions and other factors may also contribute. The affected surface and its surroundings need assessment.
Will a better paint stop peeling?
Product choice alone does not resolve an unsound surface or ongoing moisture issue. Preparation and the underlying cause need to be addressed.
Can you diagnose peeling paint from a photo?
Photos help identify the location and visible symptoms, but they may not reveal the underlying cause. An inspection may be needed.
