Quick answer: A good window or door repaint starts with the condition of the timber and old coating. The quote should identify which faces are included, any repairs needed, the preparation and coating system, and how opening and security will be managed.

What should a window painting quote include?

A window is more than the frame you see from the street. Ask whether the price includes the sash, frame, sill, reveals, glazing bars and the inside, outside or both faces. On doors, separate the leaf from its frame, edges and adjacent trim. A quote for exterior faces only is a different job from a complete inside-and-out repaint.

Send an overall photograph and a closer view of the worst area, then count the windows and doors. Note which are upstairs, difficult to open or behind a balcony. This gives us a useful starting point before inspecting the property.

Can peeling timber be painted, or does it need repair?

Loose paint and sound timber can often be prepared for repainting. Soft or deteriorated timber, open joints and repeated moisture damage need assessment before the finish is chosen. A coating cannot replace missing timber or solve a leak. Any carpentry should be identified separately so the painting scope is clear.

On older homes, the existing paint also needs consideration before it is disturbed. NSW guidance recommends trained professionals for lead-paint removal. See NSW renovation guidance; do not start dry sanding an unknown old coating.

Why does preparation affect the finish?

Edges of failing paint, dirt and incompatible old coatings can compromise the next finish. Preparation is chosen for the actual surface: cleaning, dealing with unsound coating, smoothing transitions and priming exposed areas where required. Our surface preparation page explains how this fits into the wider repaint.

Fine glazing bars and profiled timber take more handling than a plain flat door. That detail is one reason two windows of similar overall size can require different amounts of work.

Which colour and sheen should we choose?

Start with whether the surface is inside or exposed to weather, then choose a compatible product and sheen. A white trim can sit quietly against a darker wall, while a contrasting frame makes the window more prominent. View a sample alongside the wall and roof colours rather than relying only on a screen.

Our Drummoyne exterior project shows a coordinated repaint across timberwork, posts, balustrades and front render. For decorative metalwork rather than timber, use our separate balcony railing guide.

Can we stay home while windows and doors are painted?

Plan access and security before work starts. Tell us which door is your main entrance and which windows you need to open daily. The sequence must allow for product drying and return-to-service requirements without promising that every freshly painted opening can close immediately.

For homes in Bondi, Coogee, Randwick, Maroubra, Rose Bay and Vaucluse, include the suburb with your enquiry and check our service-area list for other locations. We can assess the windows as a defined project or as part of a house repaint.

Frequently asked questions

Do you paint both sides of timber windows?

The quote can include inside faces, outside faces or both. Confirm frames, sashes, sills and reveals so all quotes cover the same surfaces.

Will painting repair rotten timber?

No. Deteriorated timber needs assessment and any necessary repair or replacement before the coating work proceeds.

How much does timber window painting cost?

The number of openings, detail, coating condition, repairs and access determine the scope. An inspection is needed for an itemised price.
