Quick answer: A metalwork repaint should start by identifying the metal, the existing coating and any corrosion. Sound decorative metalwork can be prepared and coated; paint is not a repair for a weakened railing or failed fixing.

Our local service: This guide is for property owners and strata committees in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. Please check our listed service areas before enquiring about another suburb.

What makes metalwork different from a wall repaint?

Rails, gates and decorative balustrades have edges, joints and many small surfaces. The metal and old finish affect the preparation and compatible primer or topcoat. A product suitable for one substrate is not automatically the correct system for every railing.

Ask the quote to name the surfaces and coating system. Include both sides of accessible rails, posts and detailed sections where required. Make clear whether timber handrails or decking are a separate part of the job.

Can rusty balcony railings simply be painted?

Surface corrosion needs assessment and suitable preparation before coating. If a rail is loose, weakened or has badly deteriorated fixings, arrange a qualified assessment and necessary repairs first. A fresh colour cannot establish the safety of the balustrade.

Manufacturer instructions also differ between bare and previously painted metal. For example, Dulux’s Metalshield RFU Etch Primer instructions identify suitable bare-metal substrates and say not to apply that primer over existing painted surfaces. The specification must suit the job rather than simply naming a familiar product.

What did the Glebe project involve?

Our Glebe front exterior and deck project combined decorative metal balustrade and front metalwork painting with trim, masonry and refinished decking. The recorded products are Dulux Metalshield for metalwork, Dulux Weathershield for trim and masonry, and Intergrain UltraDeck for decking.

OC Carpentry & Building replaced the deteriorated timber balcony. Proview’s role was the preparation and painting work described on the project page. Keeping those roles clear matters: balcony replacement and a coating refresh are different scopes.

The gallery shows the actual Glebe home, including before-and-after views. It is an example from our existing service area, not a claim that the job was in Bondi or another Eastern Suburbs location.

How should access, protection and colour be planned?

Balcony work needs a plan for reaching both sides and protecting surfaces beneath and around the area. Tell us whether the balcony belongs to an occupied home or a strata building, and whether access is available from inside. Confirm building arrangements with the strata manager where applicable.

Choose a colour alongside the walls, windows and any timber finish. The Glebe project records Ironstone on the metalwork, but a colour swatch is only an approximation on screen. A sample and a written product specification make the choice clearer.

What should I include in a metalwork quote request?

Send photographs showing the whole railing and close views of rust, joints and existing coating. Include approximate length, level above ground, the suburb and any known repair needs. Ask whether protection, preparation, primers and finishing coats are included.

For mixed timber and metal projects, our timber painting guide helps separate the scopes. For a shared building, see common-area repaint planning and our strata service.

Future maintenance depends on exposure, condition and the selected system. Keep the product record and inspect for changes rather than relying on a universal repaint interval for every balcony.

Frequently asked questions

Does painting fix a loose or corroded balustrade?

No. Structural condition and failed fixings need appropriate assessment and repair before decorative painting.

Do all metal railings use the same primer?

No. The metal, existing coating and specified finish determine compatibility. Follow the selected system’s preparation and application requirements.

Can decking be included with the balcony repaint?

Yes, it can be discussed as a separate scope. Identify its condition and existing finish so the preparation and coating can be specified separately.
